Well, I usually lose focus anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes at a time, during which I won't be taking notes or participating. I have never been able to solve the problem by personal "disciplinary" means. Even if I'm at home in a comfortable place, reading my math textbook in order to make sense of the homework, I often can't focus and derive any meaning from sentences. This is such illuminating advice for me. I've had this same "silence" problem when talking to girls, and I always assumed that extended silence is like a death sentence, which made me nervous and messed everything up. Next time, I'll just confidently accept the silence if it happens and make the girl accept responsibility for the conversation.
