Women are people to, forcing someone to live with their rapeist (assuming he actually raped her) is fucked up. Living with the girl that you raped would not be a punishment for the guy.

That's little different than modern times of if a man is caught raping a woman, he gets arrested and charged with at least one felony. It's a deterrent for the man and would not change the fact the woman was still raped and he could just run off at any time, before or after marrying his victim. Also forcing him to marry her also means forcing her to marry him, which is fucked up. The only reason it was like that was because a woman's "virtue" had so much value then. An unmarried woman without a vcard was shamed and would have likely not become married.

Um.. Other societies didn't prevent rape. Rape is a evolutionary adaptation. Yes its bad blah blah blah, but it is here to stay nonetheless. Everyone should take the time to read some research on rape from biologist Randy Thornhill and anthropologist Craig T. Palmer. It's an evolutionary account of rape in regards to its evolutionary adaptive purpose.

While the joke is funny and this doesn't happen in the Western World, this is actually the law in some countries. About 2 years ago, a 15 year old girl committed suicide because she was forced to marry her rapist. I realize the concept of rape culture in the US is bull shit, but some places it is actually true.
