I'm a lawyer and work with other lawyers, secretaries, and paralegals in an office. Many of them are female. I'm also a litigator who does criminal defense, so I routinely work with prosecutors, many of whom are female.

Many of the females that I work with try to do this pseudo-flirtation routine when they want something from me. This forces me into four different postures:

1(a)-- I refuse to do, or agree with, what she's asking me because I cannot do it.

1(b)-- I refuse to do, or agree with, what she's asking me because I don't want to.

2(a)-- I agree to do, or agree, with what she's asking me because I have to, or there's no advantage for me not do it.

2(b)-- I agree to do, or agree, with what she's asking me because I want to.

The problem is that I do not want her to think that I'm agreeing to do something or refusing to do something because of her flirtations. Many times I agree to do something even though I don't have to because I love my job, and I know that when i do something myself, it will get done competently and effectively.

So, I guess my question is when I agree to do something that I don't have to do should I explain to the female that I'm not doing it because of her flirtations, or should I allow her to believe that her flirtations have some effect on me. Also, when I refuse to do something, should I make it clear to her that her flirtations were not effective, or should I express to her that I'm not doing it despite her very effective flirtations. I just don't want them to think that they can manipulate me because I'm some stupid dude who is enthralled by their feminine wiles.

the worst situation is when an unattractive female does the flirtation routine. It makes me so uncomfortable that I have to play along.
