Let's get a bit woo-woo a bit spiritual.
"Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment."
Meditation is cool, everyone talks about it, but I know from personal experience it can be damn hard to actually do.
It's easy to meditate once or twice, but how about every morning for a year straight. The truth about succession meditation is that, long term, due to the myriad of distractions that come with trying to sit still and focus on your breathing it can be tough.
As a beginner meditating can be difficult to actually do consistently, this usually happens because one looses focus.
All it takes is a split second of thinking and you can lose your presentness and mindful energy which for the inexperienced can ruin the experience and result in giving up on a practice which at that moment seems fleeting.
Firstly understand that you must understand that if you lose your focus, you can;’t get mindful and present again using rational, logical thought patterns.
No amount of reasoning and rational is going to allow you to become mindful again, because to become mindful you must be mindful.
So you must essentially, focus on not focusing as much of oxymoron as it sounds, it is what needs to be done.
Before trying out practical tips on regaining your mindful presence, know that this is the most important step and it usually solves most issues with concentration as a beginner.
Practical solutions.
1. Music can help. However, you should not be used overtime as this may result in you using it as a crutch to meditate. Meditation should be aimed using your internal being rather than external influences that allow you to get mindful, otherwise it’s just defeating the purpose.
2. Quiet space. This just means that you have a stable noise level, such as in your room where you’re not going to be experiences a lot of surprise noises such as friends talking or food being cooked.
3. Try to meditate fasted. This is easy to do if you cultivate a habit of morning meditation. When digesting food your mind and body are lethargic and it can be hard to focus on something such as meditation in this state of mind.
4. Take your time. You don’t jump into a 2 hour/day workout routine everyday if you have never worked out before—the same applies to meditation. If you do too much of a good thing to soon you may get discouraged and ‘use up’ what motivation sparked your initial interest. Take your time and focus on baby steps.
5. Coffee.
Now this is a tricky one and it's more subjective than the others. Some people are going to be able to really use the caffeine i their system to better focus on the fact of meditate.
On there contrary for some it's going to raise the hear trade to high and possibly raise the chance of anxiety and an inability to concentrate on anything but this.
So my suggestion is to only drink coffee before meditation in these scenarios.
- The morning
- You're a regular drinker of it and desensitised to it.
Anything I've missed? Let me know. I always hear and write guides on how to meditate but never how to prevent getting distracted and unfocused.
