You ate judging people too much. While I share the underlying philosophy of what you are taking about, I disagree to see people who chase materialistic are doing it "wrong". For me, it's just their goal and what they want wiv their lives. However, if I know someone who chases materialistic things but are.miserable though they get what they want, then it's a different case.

As for you, don't wish to be "ignorant" again. That's just going backwards. I chase materialistic things as long as it makes me happy (roof under my head, things I may need, certain comforts such as a gud pillow or a gud mattress). I'll do it as long as I see the value in them for me but I know how to not fuck myself over by spending too much on things that don't add value to me. However. Maybe in another 5 years my life and its goals may change. I may not want a good pillow or a good mattress. What matters is am contend?

Then coming back to you, if you feel alone that is because as you mentioned, you are surrounded by people who don't share the same interests as you. And something else that you may not notice is, there will.br a shift of perception amongst your peers when they notice you've stepped of the rat race. They may not realize you have done this intentionally, and for the naive ones, may take it as, you've lost.

Like the other comment mentions, find people who share more of your interests, or encourage a close friend to do things that you find interests in, whatever that may be. But do not always look down on the people that are chasing their materialistic things. Don't be put off by it either.

Learn to do your thing, find and explore what you want from life, enjoy it and the way you want. I always say, you only get one life, enjoy it.

PS: I also hope you have not fallen into the trap of finding bliss cuz you've realized finding happiness can be a journey where materialistic things doing exist. Cuz, people fool themselves into this and seek happiness elsewhere, not because of an epiphany, but because they need another out.

I used to be in the same spot as you are. Depression phase (of grief) or whatever. It happens when your knowledge exceeds your wisdom. You "know" things but you didn't quite yet "accept" them. Over time you realize how lucky you are not being caught in the vicious cycle. It's not something that happens over night.

Think of it like a lucid dream. You woke up inside your dream and you realize you are in a dream. At first you're like, well this is pointless, whatever i do doesn't matter. Well yeah, but just because it's a dream it doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.

You slowly begin to enjoy all the simplest stupidest things. The fact that you can breathe and touch and shape stuff. It becomes like an infinite virtual reality game.

That said I personally haven't really reached the state of complete bliss, but I can see it far down the road now. And it's much better than the blue pill enslavement.

Yes, ignorance is bliss but that is until you fall into a trap and get emotionally injured by people. Ignorance is thus a dangerous game and often serious consequences which cab't be predicted because the individual chooses to be ignorant.

Yes, those smoke and drink think that they are having the time of their lives but wait till they hit 35-40 and are facing health issues such as liver failure and breathing issues due to drinking and smoking.

There's a show on FXX called "You're The Worst"

I think it does contain a good number of RP concepts and truths built into it. And some not so RP elements as well. ( It is a TV show after all....)

The lead female character has massive depression in S2, and she becomes infatuated with a couple next door. Who seem like they have a perfect life and watching them makes her feel better, as if there is "hope" since there are "happy people" out there. But when she sneaks in a spies on them having a conversation alone, she can see all the broken and bitter things they are hiding, and they have problems just like everyone else. The episode ends with her crying her eyes out.

When you see people, you see often what they are trying to present, but nothing is ever that easy. I sort of know a "perfect couple" If you look at them on paper, it's nice. He's making high 6 figures and a partner at his firm. She works part time and is gorgeous and fit and nurturing. They have two successful ( relative to their age) kids who seem mostly well adjusted. They have a nice home, stability, entrenched in the local community. They have the envy of many of their peers. Most of their married couple friends, the husbands want to badly bang her if they could. The wives would gladly dump their mates now for him if he was single.

I've been exposed to them in different situation and under duress, and he's constantly embattled at his career/ work. To maintain the earning power he does and his position, he has to ride the edge all time. Near nervous breakdown because if those private schools become public, if those world trekking vacations disappear, he knows shes gone. With her, the self induced pressure to be "everything" i.e. great mom, great wife, social life robust, homemaker, part time career woman, etc, drives her pretty much insane. They actually sort of resent each other. They live far beyond their mean and despite his robust earning power, they are in debt and living hand to mouth. They are also indebted to both sets of parents, i.e her parent and his parents have helped them out financially quite a bit and that takes it toll too.

The daughter has self esteem issues and the son is a rebellious pothead, but a star high school athlete.

I'm not saying every story is like this, but American Beauty as a film was right - LOOK CLOSER. That's the tagline in the film. Look closer.

You think you have an idea of how most people live and operate, but you don't really. No one does for the most part. A lot of people are just as tired and confused as you. Also lonely and afraid and cynical. They just hide it better.

Nothing good comes from comparing yourself to other people.

That being said, understanding social nuance and how to "read people" comes at a push/pull cost. It's push because you can read it and defend yourself against much harm. It's pull because you realize people are mostly predictable and most of them are just plain bad people and it's easy to get sad about it.

Look closer. When you do, you realize comparing yourself to others is only measuring you against their marketing version of themselves, not the true them.
