It depends on where you're getting your alphaness from.

A lot of guys depend upon their male social circle members for asserting their alphaness. In these groups, social pressures all but presuppose a constant assertion of sexual success in comparison to the lesser males in the circle. Therefore, in that context, sex is absolutely critical to being alpha. This is where you get 14 year old boys on a bus calling each other fags (negging each other, in point of fact).

There's also a kind of crazy sex form of alphaness that works well with some women. This is the basic theory of just going at it so hard and insane that she's overwhelmed by your alpha behavior. I think being all manly man everywhere else and then turning out to be a wuss in the sack would probably end the tingles pretty quickly. I would say "Alpha" comes from the PUA community. It simply means someone women want to fuck. The more women willing to fuck that guy, the more Alpha he is. Beta is the opposite. So whatever traits get you laid are Alpha traits. (So by this definition, being super good looking could be Alpha.)

Some guys, especially on TRP, want "Alpha" to also include some ideal of masculine behavior. I think this a watering down of the concept so much so that it becomes meaningless.

This is one for the glossary. Alpha/beta: over generalized terms that have no use other than egotistical posturing, denigrating others, and the creation of blue pill strawman discussions.

alpha/beta dichotomy is simply used to signify social hierarchy. it is drastically simplified but it gets the point across. women are instinctually attracted to the "leader of the pack" and dominance in general (though i personally believe it varies in intensity from girl to girl). certain behaviors exhibit dominance and are colloquially referred to as "alpha" however acting like that alone will not necessarily make you a leader or anything like that, just alter people's perception. what you do during sex is your business, and to a lesser extent whichever girl you're fucking. nobody else's. many on TRP would argue (myself included) that most girls prefer you to display dominance; it is both instinctual as well socially reenforced. that said, these behavioral patterns serve you better in leading up to sex than during.
