I think it has more to do with John Stewart's intelligence, and the crossfire guys lacking intelligence. Damn John looks so much younger 10 years ago.

Really going into the wayback machine for this one, eh? Yeah, the clip is great but Jon was really taking advantage of the hosts. They were doing a job and that job was to debate in short adversarial sound bytes. Jon basically pulled the equivalent of yelling at the customer service rep because the phone company screwed up your bill. Yes, it feels good but at the end of the day, it isn't that poor customer service rep's fault that the script he has to follow makes him sound like an idiot. In this case, he got the show cancelled (for a while anyway; they brought it back recently) so, maybe a little more effective than yelling at customer service rep. Still, he's acting like a bully not an alpha.

Put yourself in the hosts' shoes. There's dick all they can do. The only frame they can keep is the ridiculous frame they're paid to adopt. When Jon calls them out on being ridiculous, all they could do was either try to argue with him and lose because he was so clearly right or lose frame. They were caught in a lie they were being paid to maintain. That's rough.

Also, FYI, Jewish guys named Jon will almost always spell their name without an H. It's usually short for Jonathan as opposed to John which is a Christian name after either/both John the Baptist or St. John of The Gospel According to St. John fame. You might find some exceptions nowadays (there are Jewish kids with all sorts of non-Jewish names) but particularly for men of that generation, it's a safe bet.
