TLDR: After the Oregon community college shooting, internet incels confess their loneliness, blaming their misery on (admittedly) anti-male society. A few even begin advocating mass murder at universities.

Summary:

Is the world waking up?

The author delves deep into a subculture that is as foreign to her as books are to the average joe ("Books (incels)? Who the fuck cares about books?") - the incels. There, she finds an excess of self-loathing and pity, and a dearth of self-improvement and positivity. The interviewees attribute their incel status to

"a self-sustaining package of psychological issues: depression, neuroticism, anxiety, autistic disorders. Those problems prevent incels from forming relationships - which in turn makes their depression and anxiety more extreme."

The vicious cycle at work. Though these are certainly detrimental characteristics to have in the SMP, they are not insurmountable. It's obvious that they lack masculine role models who can teach them how to eliminate their shortcomings. In today's society, this is no surprise. The interviewee, in this case a foreveralone moderator, describes to author Caitlin Dewey that

"If you hate yourself and believe you’re unworthy of anyone’s affection … you won’t be worthy of anyone’s affection because nobody is attracted to self pity,” the Reddit mod said. “It’s a self fulfilling prophecy, but one that’s incredibly difficult to break out of. The loneliness is devastating.”

This is the blue pill dream of Happily Ever After™ destroying the masculine psyche. These men, whether by nature or by nurture, have been denied their life goal, physical companionship, and source of validation - a long term relationship with an attractive woman. Obviously, these women are with their Chads, not with some "fat, unemployed, basement-dwelling neckbeard," the incel moderator says of the community.

These men recognize the root of the issue. A poster on Sluthate writes that

"It's obvious that there are more and more young men who just can't take it anymore. The sad thing is: the modern world is anti-male and literally drives men crazy."

/u/CopperFox3c's recent post on gender fluidity driving people insane is yet another testament to the failures of gender neutralization. However, cognizance of the issue alone will not change its underlying causes. In fact, awareness might exacerbate the issue. It comes as no surprise to the seasoned readers of TRP that suppressing masculinity will result in tragedy. There have been 32 school shootings since the 2014 Isla Vista killings (Elliot Rodgers). This is merely conjecture, as I haven't ascertained the cause behind each of the 32 school shootings, but I suspect that each of these perpetrators (all of whom are men) had something in common - the lack of a positive masculine outlet. Notably, the Oregon community college shooter was raised by a single mother. The long term societal effects of single parenthood have been documented all too well, yet it becomes increasingly common.

Not only is there a lack of a positive male environment, but merely being outed as an incel is socially devastating. The interviewees

"point out that society has nothing but derision for straight men who struggle to get girls. That we stigmatize both shyness and virginity in adult men, even though both are, in many cases, completely natural."

Again we see an example of core tenets: preselection and social proof. They are used in this case not for sexual strategy but simply for avoiding humiliation. Interestingly, sociologist Susie Scott wrote in a 2006 paper that society has

"pathologized a trait that’s really nothing more than a constructed social preference, branding awkward men as creeps or losers when they’re really just … different."

It's interesting to see a female author accurately ascertain the cause behind a up

TRP readers have found the solution: improvement, outcome independence, and self-actualization, among other things. I was never an incel, but TRP has significantly changed my lifestyle and outlook for the better. If more men would wake up and embark with others like them on the journey of hard truths and self improvement, perhaps those in Oregon and elsewhere wouldn't have died. It is essential to the long and short term health of our society that everybody wakes up, and men find a productive outlet for their energy.

Of course, none of this hasn't already been said before.
