Just a brief field report from the last few weekends, last night in particular. I go out dancing all the time – I legitimately love to dance, regardless of whether I bring home a girl, and I'm really good at it. But what I keep finding is that the girls at dance clubs/bars are always either: (1) out with their girlfriends in a context that often precludes hooking up with a random dude, or more commonly (2) out with their boyfriends.

Regarding #2, the following has been my experience time and time again. I'll start dancing with a girl who seems to be alone on the dance floor. We hit it off, dance together, sometimes close and tight. Vibing really strongly, then all of a sudden she'll either abruptly run away to her man standing in the wings, or I'll get a tap on my shoulder and there he is.

When it's the latter, very often the girl will downplay the dude's status with her. Last night when the boyfriend tapped me on the shoulder, I asked if she was his girlfriend. He nodded, and I said my bad, I had no idea, and went elsewhere on the floor. Then when I saw the girl again later, I apologized for trying to hook up with her when she had a boyfriend, and she said it was "just a joke" haha. These taken chicks, it's like they know I'm a better option – infinitely more fun and sexy than the tools that brought them – and will deny the significance of their man right in front of him.

Still, I can't bring myself to try for a hard close and steal them completely. I'm just not that much of an asshole – I'd hate to be the guy who went out with his hot girlfriend and she left with some random other dude. But still, it's kind of funny, and I suppose kind of invigorating, to consistently be the man who tempts the girls from their dates.

Luckily, I don't really need to pick up a new girl every time I go out. I do just fine, and even when I'm not seeing someone, I feel good enough about myself to not take a weekend night alone as a personal failure. Sometimes it's enough just to have a taken girl whisper in my ear that I'm sexy.

But watch out, guys with girlfriends! Just like any human being with a pulse, they will always have eyes for someone better.
