5th grade was the 1st time I tried to "squeeze one off". It turned into a weekly habit until I got a horny girlfriend in 11th grade.
My generation was the one who realized that "hairy palms" from jacking off was an urban legend. We saw nothing wrong with it, but discussion among guys was verboten. During the "dry" times between girlfriends I picked the habit back up. Again, I saw nothing at all wrong with it.
After coming (no pun intended) to TRP I learned that anything more than the rare occasional fap could become mentally destructive. Your statement about "feeling like I wasted my time and failing at life" struck a chord.. like I'm totally into the porn, thoughts, fantasies, experience up until the end and then all I want to do is clean up and erase all signs of it.
Yeah.. TRP toned down the fapping which in turn toned down the porn. +1000 on the sex comment! I save my loads for my wife. She is awestruck with how powerful our interludes became since my transformation last fall.

Very interesting topic. Notice that this world-reknowned expert on the subject has also come to a similar conclusion as you.

I find that my limit is about ten days without orgasm and after that point I go a little insane. However, this limit can easily be extended if I have positive physical touch, such as massage or lots of hugs. Yes, fucking hugs. Positive physical touch is crucial for good mental health. OTOH, I don't really have a place to get lots of hugs, but massages are easy to get. The only time I get lots of hugs is when I travel and meet up with bunches of old friends. Hugs galore and I feel great for days. I know, not a very macho post, but you'd be surprised at how touchy-feely strong men were in ancient times.

Hugs and massages both give you a dopamine rush, not as high as an orgasm, but explains why it helps you last longer, your receptors must be weak if this is the case
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It's more about oxytocin, actually, which is why it's nicknamed "The Hug Drug". Dopamine is released as well, but in far less amounts than what you get from sex or anything really exciting. Hugs also promote serotonin release and lower cortisol. But mostly, it's the oxytocin, which we pretty much only get from interaction with other people. All the other neurochemicals can be released without company.
Edit: Your OP was removed, huh? Looks like the mods don't like NoFap.

I was also wondering why it was deleted as well. It wasn't a bad comment.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I up-voted it. Ah, well. Pro-LTR posts sometimes go missing, too. It happens.

NoFap is retarded and for most guys that do not have a psychological addiction to jerking it, it is completely unnecessary. Testosterone peaks after 8 days, so once a week is about the most NoFap that anyone should do.
Nofappers report getting more attention from women
When you go that long without fapping, simple eye contact turns you on. Confirmation bias. If you really want more testosterone and pheremones, eat grass fed beef for a couple weeks. Same effect, except your brain doesn't go all retard mode.

I think it depends on your sex drive. Personally I'll have wet dreams if I abstain for too long so it needs to be done on occasion. I've never noticed any changes in my personality abstaining for a month anyways, it all seems to be placebo.

As GV19 put it, porn isn't normal. However, masturbation (especially males) is normal, if not expected.
After I go 6 months with NoFap, I'll probably go back to a healthy regimen of two or three times a week, just not with porn.
On a side note, sex is encouraged while on NoFap, I can abstain 6 months no problem because I'm still having sex. Women can smell it if you don't have sex or fap at all. It smells desperate.

If you absolutely cannot resist the urge, fap but not to porn.
[–]Disaster5323853 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Porn is the culprit, not masturbation itself. Nofap is bullshit.
I wouldn't consider it bullshit considering the idea behind it is simply to allow the brain to level itself out for a period of time after being abused by porn and then resume normal masturbation. Calling anything outright bullshit is kind of... Bullshit.
[–]Disaster5323850 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
While that might sound like a plausible idea, there is zero scientific evidence to support it right now. Until there is, it's bullshit in my eyes.

"After I jerk off, I immediately feel like I've waisted my time and I'm failing at life."
The release of endorphin and other neural hormones, demotivates you since your body thinks it has reached its goal. Fapping regularly is no different that smoking dope everyday.
If you want to be a passive beta male then go ahead but if you want a natural aggression in you then fap less frequently. It becomes an addiction like any other.

I've been curling weights lately since I found then in my dad's garage. I basically have dumbbells and a bench press bar that I can add weights on. Is this a good start or is it too limited? It's enough to get my arms sore so it feels like I'm making some progress.

Read the sidebar and head over to /r/fitness for suggestions on routines but in a sentence, I suggest lifting three sets of eight reps, where on the seventh rep you reach failure and the eighth rep should be pushed beyond your limit, rest 90 secs then repeat.

It's true. Porn isn't normal and too much consumption can adversely affect your brain, abstaining allows you to go back to how you were meant to be.

Porn isn't normal
WTF does this mean? You don't think porn is normal? Porn has been around forever. And there is plenty of normal porn out there.
too much consumption can adversely affect your brain
This can be said about literally any activity.
abstaining allows you to go back to how you were meant to be
WTF is this "how you were meant to be"? This sounds like something a religious nutjob would tell his son.

There is a massive difference between pre-internet porn and the easy access to unlimited porn online. Humans have never before had access to such an endless supply of sexual novelty as we do now. This definitely has the potential to negatively affect the dopaminergic pathways and lead to the sort of "burn out" that addicts suffer.
[–]prodigyx1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I completely agree with this. The youngest TRP generation has been raised with unlimited access to a wide variety of high quality porn. The rest of TRP grew up with stolen Playboy mags. I think that is why we see so much support for NoFap lately.
For the younger TRPers that found amazing porn before developing an actual physical sexual relationship, there is a much more pronounced negative effect on the dopamine pathways from porn. NoFap can be beneficial.
For a lot of the older TRPers, porn is just porn. NoPorn/NoFap is pointless to them because they already established those dopamine pathways with actual sex a long time ago.

Yes, I agree.
Neuroplasticity shows that the brain changes even once we are older, so it's possible to screw yourself up, even if you had a solid foundation to start with. However, I do agree that this doesn't have the same level of difficulty in overcoming as with someone who messes themselves up in their formative years. It's easier to rebuild than to build from scratch on a poor foundation.
[–]colucci1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yup. Due to TRP being more traditional and defending older values (which is not necessarily a bad thing honestly), there's a fine line between sound TRP advice and ungrounded religious and conservative nonsense.

[–]GV19-4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And I'm sure you're a fuck boy because you tried to incite an argument over reddit, now if you haven't jacked off for 5000 days or 5 seconds doesn't matter to me.
