I've been reading about facial expressions and wanted to share it with this community.

Let's start with this article: https://www.psychologicalscience.org/observer/are-neutral-faces-really-neutral

Experiments done show neutral faces are way more believable and well received in a professional setting where a workplace service failure had happened as opposed to angry or shameful faces. Why? The article doesn't say but my guess would be that having distance to your emotions could be soothing to a neurotic beta boss.

The article also mentions that people can distinguish neutral faces after good or bad previous emotion. That they are not as neutral as they would seem.

In this article they asked men and women what their gut feeling was about people displaying different emotions.

Smiling men are rated the least attractive. Proud and powerful men were rated the highest. Even moody or ashamed men rated higher in attractiveness than smiling men!!

However smiling women were rated the most attractive amongst expressions for females. While traits like pride or confidence were the least attractive.

What can we learn from this? No one wants a smiling agreeable beta. Not women and not your colleagues. While a smile can help to create comfort upon initially meeting. It shouldn't be used excessively with people you already know just like a strategic tool with uncomfortable people. Smiling excessively as a man makes you seem scared an unsure which in turn makes people scared and unsure.

Furthermore

This article proves our temporary facial expressions in reactions to short events guide our long term mental health. People with depression get cured by having botox injected into their face.

TLDR: Science says your facial expression literally shapes your inner game, depression or happiness. It also shapes how people treat you. Cultivate pride and confidence and people will treat you better. Smile and people will treat you worse.
