Do not confuse "duty" with what other people expect of you; they are utterly different. Duty is a debt you owe to yourself to fulfill obligations you have assumed voluntarily. Paying that debt can entail anything from years of patient work to instant willingness to die. Difficult it may be, but the reward is self-respect. But there is no reward at all for doing what other people expect of you, and to do so is not merely difficult, but impossible. It is easier to deal with a footpad than it is with the leech who wants "just a few minutes of your time, please—this won't take long." Time is your total capital, and the minutes of your life are painfully few. So learn to say No—and to be rude about it when necessary. Otherwise you will not have time to carry out your duty, or to do your own work, and certainly no time for love and happiness. The termites will nibble away your life and leave none of it for you.

(This rule does not mean that you must not do a favor for a friend, or even a stranger. But let the choice be yours. Don't do it because it is "expected" of you.)

It's a great lesson OP. Whenever I feel too afraid to get out of my comfort zone (in order to earn more money or get a better job) I tell myself that one day I'm going to die and would I rather live a good life or a great one?

You can make money back, you can't make time back. I want to bitchslap the living SHIT out of friends who are unhappily married, watching their lives go to shit. They say, "Man, it's better to just stick it out because she will take half my shit." They are living sexless, miserable lives at home where everything is a fight, and they get no respect. They hate it, but they care too much about the money they would lose.

Homie, in 15 years when you're raising another dude's kid and she's filing for divorce because you've already put the kid through college, she's still going to take the money. The money is lost. Save the time.

This is why people will always advise you to pay the $ to get the best lawyer you can. Shell out for the right doctor. It sucks that sometimes you will have to seriously cripple yourself financially, but if it's something that adds 10 years onto your life, like beating that false rape accusation, getting custody of your kids, having your cancerous growth eliminated by a doctor who needs to be payed in yachts, then spend the money.

Id say time but before that I would have to add my ability to challenge my beliefs and self at all times. Sure time is worth a lot and you can't get more of it, but a lot of people are completely wrapped up in bullshit or maslow's heirarchy of needs or stuck in the past, or stuck in mental maslow of bullshit.

Being free of delusion, at least mostly, and being able to admit to yourself everything you know could be wrong and thrown out the window, and how insignificant you are, is extremely valuable. Its kind of like conquering death. You can't lose anything because you never really had anything to begin with, you just think you did.

TLDR Freedom in an existential sense
