Ok here's the deal. Most guys add 2 inches to their height. So when a guy says he's 6', chances are he is really 5'10. So when women say they want a guy who's 6' or taller, they mean they want a guy who is average height (5'10 in the United States) or taller.
Something I've noticed in real life is that the guys who bitch about their height being the reason they don't get girls are usually ugly or small framed physically as well. If you're short and narrow, you're out of the game. If you are ugly you are also going to have some problems.
The truth is that many times a girl will say that a guy is too short for her because he is actually ugly. They use the short excuse as a euphemism because it's more socially appropriate to reject someone because of their height.
I go to a big state school and most short guys (5'7-5'9) actually do have decent thin girlfriends. The ones in this height range that do struggle with women are usually unattractive physically or have very poor social skills. At a taller height, chances are they would still have the same issues.
One thing that you do need to keep in mind as a short guy is to always maintain your frame. Never reveal any insecurities and never give off the impression that you are insecure about your height.
You must go to the gym frequently and make sure you stay lean as well with good diet and cardio. The short stocky powerlifter look doesn't work for shorter guys. However, this kind of physique https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bwu55LoCMAAGkV4.jpg:large is a very good look for shorter men (the guy in the picture is 5'9).
Although you should be spending a lot of time in the gym, you can't talk about it to others. Don't post gym memes on facebook, don't talk about workout routines and definitely don't tell people you love lifting weights. If people ask you how you got your physique, tell them that you played sports in high school. There is a stigma with short guys hitting the gym to compensate so you need to avoid talking about it. Being a gym rat as a short guy can work negatively when trying to build a rapport with others.
I will say this though if you are 5'4 or under you might encounter some serious problems with dating.
