Really? I thought it was good for me though. I see a lot of the guys who have huge arms at my gym doing alternating curls up to a set of 100 (like, A 1, B 1, A 2, B 2, A 3, ... , A 100, B 100). Is that detrimental to me?

Here's your thread source:

Hey all,

According to the nutritionist on my campus (2nd year university student here), I'm severely underweight (I weigh 126 at 5'8", I should be 150). So I'm trying to bulk up.

So for the past few weeks I decided to finally kick my ass into gear. I've cut fried/greasy foods out cold turkey, been eating lots of proteins and good fats (cashews are my favorite snack now), spinach, jalapenos, and salmon, plain rice, all the good stuff.

I've also been actually working out. Every morning and night for the past three weeks, I've been doing the following:

  • 20 push-ups
  • 50 crunches
  • 50 bicycles(?) (they're like crunches, but your legs are raised and you kick them in a bicycle motion)
  • 2-minute plank
  • 2-minute wall squat
  • 100 high kicks

In addition, I've been hitting the gym for free-weights 3 times a week (non-consecutive days). I'm still feeling the burn with 10 and 12-pound weights, so I do 3 sets of the following (2 with the 10lb, 1 with the 12lb):

  • 60 alternating bicep curls (30 for each arm)
  • 10 second break
  • 10 straight out lifts (the one where your arms are straight, and you bring them out in front of you to level with your shoulders, then back down)
  • 10 second break
  • 10 overhead (simulating overhead press with individual free weights instead of barbell)
  • Repeat twice, then move to heavier weight

So any tips for what I can improve on with my workouts? Anything additional that I can do to help me get stronger?

No worries man.

The way weights were explained to me was like this: If you're going to do three sets of 10 reps, you should fail around the 8th rep of the 3d set. If you can do all 30, up the weight until you fail around the 8th rep on the 3d set. You might fail on the 10th rep of the 2d set. This is just a guideline.

When I can do all 30, I'll make sure my form is correct for a few more sessions before adding weight. There's going to be people here who know a lot more about this, but this is the simple explanation.

That seems to make sense. Should I also worry about jumping up weight too quickly? I used to work in construction for five years where I'd be lifting 100lb bags of concrete to and from the site all day, but I stopped doing that a year ago, so I feel like I should be building up to heavier weights rather than trying to jump to the 40lb etc weights. Is this true?
