If you want to know the truth start by turning off your television” – Author unknown “The television is really the greatest God damned tool of propaganda ever invented” – Author unknown

Summary - turn off your tv if you want to know the truth.

While waiting this afternoon at the barber shop today for my haircut there was the usual game on the TV’s they have playing somewhat loudly in the background. Since I never go to bars anymore this is the only place where I am exposed to it. Yes I do watch TV but only after the season is over and I download the whole season all at once from here. I can get through a whole season at my pace with zero commercials and in lots less time. For the record I watch Hawaii Five-O, Arrow (but I’m getting tired of that) and Shameless. Back to the barber shop today. The commercials and the content for matter were extremely annoying. The only thing that came to mind was the movie Idiocracy. It also reminded me of the true definition of marketing – Getting people to buy stuff they don’t need with money they don’t have.

I grew up without a TV since my parents did not want that influence in the house but I got one right out of college moving away from home and into my first job. I still did not watch a lot of it but I did watch too much looking back on it. However, on my quest for self-improvement I got rid of my idiot box, I mean TV, in March of 2010. When my roommate moved out I thought then was a good time to set up my TV as another computer display and that’s exactly what I did. The only programs I watch now are online youtube videos and other free shows, moves and documentaries from such sites as this on my 55 inch paper thin Samsung. I’ve never even used the TV functionality on this “TV”. This has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. It has freed up lots of time over the years on my journey of self-improvement. I was able to get much more healthy in mind and especially body and read more since I’m not spending my time in front of the idiot box. Now when I am at parent’s or sister’s house over the holidays except for my dad’s movie collection I cannot stand the crap they sit and watch. There use to be a site called turnoffyourtv.com but’s not around anymore. Also, I’m not into watching sports at all so the only reason I can think of to have a TV is <birds chirping …>.

Everybody, yes, 100% of the people I work with are die-hard “blue-pillars”. What do you expect from government workers? There’s not a one of them, FTE (full-time employees) that is that is not a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat, but to be fair some of them may the southern type of Democrat. I mention this because when they find out that I ‘threw away” my TV so long ago they are literally shocked and dismayed. They have no response, none! Funny how many of them are obese and dumb to boot. The only reason I’m a government FTE is because I don’t want to have to do real work for a living which I will discuss in another blog post. Yes, I’m lazy. Oh yea, and the benefits are great even though I could make lots more money in the private sector.

What’s your TV story? I love to hear about it. Please post below.
