You have two choices, address the problem or leave it alone.

You decided to address the problem. If I were in your shoes, I would have done the same. I would also have to realize that he would make your life a living hell.

Work is never going to be a fun environment no matter what the circumstances. It's work, it's not fun. But your objective no matter what is to get your work done. If they are not impeding your ability to get work done, then it should be of little concern to you (unless you can't help but need their validation). However, if they are hindering your ability to get your work done in a timely manner, I would suggest approaching the problem head on first before escalating.

If the problem needs to be escalated, there are bigger problems that the company will have to address other than character issues.

You were treating your co worker as a child that must abide by your bidding. Then when he didn't comply you got ruffled and had to rationalize his and your behavior. You focused on his looks and his popularity and it was the beginning of your snowball into resentment. Now you are beside yourself mentally blaming everyone, but yourself. It wasn't his looks, popularity, or the way he treated you. It was you not getting your way that started your negative train of thought and resentment. Kind of like a spoiled child.

From your story I gather you are not a manager, but an equal so you really had no place to pull the Boston Bomber aside with a fucking list no less of all the times he misbehaved and how he upset you and hurt your feelings.

You were expecting everyone to change their behavior to suit you and as long as they do what you want you feel better. Fuck you. I'm not here to make your life better. You don't sign my checks and you are not my boss and that was what he told you non verbally by continuing in his behavior. That is what all the other workers told you as well by their actions.

So I ask you this...

Why couldn't you have joined in his reindeer games? Laugh at some jokes. Prop him up a bit. Feed his narcissistic ego. Think as you wish, but do as everyone else does. You may have gained a friend and parlayed that into a relation with one of his fan girls.

You have a lot to learn not only about TRP, but social dynamics in general.

No shit you drew people's ire. You demolished the social structure of the office by telling on the alpha to HR for being successful and fun. You could have easily accomplished the exact same thing that you did without making enemies and creating a paper trail.

You are actually lucky that the guy was cool, or he could have blown this all up into a much bigger problem. You were not being bullied. Nothing you described resembled bullying until after you went to HR. You were just in the presence of someone with more charisma, and your instinct was to sabotage and cut him down rather than seeing him as competition to best or learn from.

Everyone will have less fun at work now because your ego couldn't handle being around a cooler guy.

I remember this happening to me. Succeeded after being an extreme entrepreneur and it took me a while to normalize. During my time at school, employment, and living with female roommates, everyday was a fight for my life. Very jumpy, ready to get down at a moments notice, living like I was in a war zone... You get the idea. It took me an entire year of solitude to normalize. A fucking year.

You all need to become absolutely ruthless to get to where you need to get. I lived in a van (couldn't recommend it enough due to the amount of freedom at such a young, unestablished age) for four years due to having to walk around eggshells with psycho female roommates and not being able to afford the over-inflated rent. You be fucking ruthless, men. Do not be passive for one minute until you get to where you want to get because people will capitalized on your misfortune to feel better about themselves.

In theory yes, in practice, not a good idea, unless the guy is doing something that threatens your safety. There are many ways of dealing with that situation to make it go away. Just be really boring. Don't feed the guy any attention. Don't be mean, just be a blank wall. Also, you could do stuff like press a button discreetly to have your phone ring. "oh, sorry, i have to take this." Do this enough, and he'll subconsciously realize he's not getting what he wants and he'll seek it elsewhere. Keep that in mind for future reference.

this is primitive behavior that happens when you "defy" the alpha in your group, basically you dont want to silently endure it as that would reinforce your beta position and passivity, you must hit back, always hit back with twice the force preferably more, you can either use a direct approach or an indirect machiavellian approach (record them and use it against them, and make up stories about them) if you sense that you're fucked, just consider this job lost and make sure to make their lives miserable, this is beneficial if you're usually bullied at work and will make you get used to demanding respect as a non negotiable.
