70's were a different time, but this guy deserves mad praise. It was unthinkable then that a woman would leave her kids to her new husband. We know better now.
My heart goes out to the now adult kids, I hope they don't have mental issues having been knowingly abandoned by their biological dad and mom.

Steve was a fucking rock . Taking on three adolescent kids would not be easy. He likely to had to work his ass off. It says he never formally adopted them. Probably impossible to do in this day without massive paperwork.
