They will stick to the story that women don't care about looks or money and just want a nice guy.

Of those three factors, the most important ones from an evolutionary standpoint are having money and being a nice guy, with looks being a bit less important. Female humans are wired to look for partners that are able to acquire resources and are willing to share those resources with her and her young. Males who have no ability to acquire resources (money is the proxy for resources in today’s society) and who are likely to abandon the female after reproducing with her, are not good for her from an evolutionary standpoint. Looks do come into play, because the female will want to select a healthy male with good genetic material, but among relatively healthy males the most important factors are going to be resources and the willingness to commit, to care for her, and to care for her offspring.

Not all of them. The males who weren’t willing to provide for the female and help her care for the young were not selected by the females for reproduction. When I said “nice guy,” I meant someone who was genuinely nice and caring towards the woman. That is one of the two biggest factors, with having resources being another one. But males not willing to share their resources with the female while she cared for young were not sexually selected and passed on their genes less often.

The only majorly successful reproductive strategy for males was providing resources and caring for young with a female - starting a family.

The other two male strategies were: 1) Mating and then leaving, which is evolutionarily good in terms of population size, but which was not selected for as much because females evolved to not be interested in these males as much (their offspring were less likely to survive without the male’s help and resources). 2) Forced reproduction / rape, which was also not selected for as much because males who possessed this tendency would have been ostracized from tribes, particularly if they raped the most valuable females who were typically reserved for the males at the top of the hierarchy (the “alphas”).

For many thousands of years, women did not get to select who they reproduced with. Not to put too fine a point on it, fierce ruthless killers killed the neighboring tribe's men and fucked their women whether those women liked it or not. Obviously, those men did not treat the slave women in a "genuinely nice and caring" way.

Furthermore, until very recently, women did not get to select who they reproduced with because their fathers selected their husbands for them (or at least, vetoed unsuitable husbands with lethal force if necessary). Those husbands were selected for their resources, not for their niceness and caring-ness. Daddy will choose a rich husband over a nice husband for you every single time. Quite frankly, the recent phenomenon of men and women choosing mates for themselves, rather than their parents choosing for them, is a disaster, a failed experiment.

"Nice and caring" simply had little or no influence on human evolution.

This is not entirely true. While in tribal societies men did kill others and stole their women, forced reproduction was relatively rare. The female MUST have a certain amount of comfort to sucesfully go through pregnancy and this includes psychological comfort. The men who could not provide that simply didnt have children and went to evolutionary deadend as a result. If you look at early civilizations, women had A LOT of power as well. For example in ancient babylon we have translated surviving law books written by Hammurabi and astonishingly high number of laws is about protecting women and treat men far harsher than women for same crimes (for example women get fined for stealing while men get hands chopped off).

Now, there is however a problem with association here in that people think nice and caring is the same thing as providing. Its not, and was not and has gotten anywhere even close to that only very recently when mental work became far more important than physical one. Nice and caring was not an evolutionary selection because it was not a useful one.

There’s nothing wrong or immoral about this. We see it in countless species, and not just among mammals. Almost all animals exhibit something similar, and so do many plants. Even in hermaphroditic plants that possess male and female parts, the male parts will attempt to spread genetic material indiscriminately and the female parts of the same plant will exhibit sexual selectiveness, acting as a filter that only accepts the best of its own male pollen. This is reflected in gonads - male individuals have large numbers of highly mobile sperm in animals (or pollen in flowers, for example), and females possess a small number of time-sensitive, immobile eggs.

Male and female are two different reproductive strategies. This kind of binary system of strategies will naturally arise in most evolutionary contexts, though not all (see: fungi, which have 36,000 different sexes and operate via completely different reproductive principles).

I’m not an expert, just a hobbyist. I like to study this topic in my free time is all.

I’d imagine the answer to your question is simple. Males, because they don’t have to raise young unless they choose to, are open to a greater number of sexual partners. And females are not only sexually modest for reasons of evolutionary selection. The female in mammal species is the one who bears and raises the young, so she will select only the partners she feels will provide her resources in this endeavor. There is, however, also the factor I mentioned above - evolutionary selection. Female is the selective reproductive strategy whereas male is a kind of broadcast strategy. Without females, only natural selection would be at play, not sexual selection. Males are great for mass propagation, but females are necessary for making sure only the most evolutionarily fit males pass down their genetic material for the good of the species.
