If you can secretly store your paperwork/most treasured belongings in a safety deposit box (in case you are worried he will retaliate) please do so. More than anything, see if you can speak to a lawyer specializing in divorce (again, undetected by spouse) to explore your options.

Get a storage locker and start moving things into it slowly. Important documents, clothes, sentimental belongings that sort of thing. Set up a P.O. Box and change your mailing address immediately. Look up family law attorneys in your area, most offer free consultations.

I don’t know how life-threatening your situation is, but if he’s not being abusive you might be better off going at a slower pace so you can stack up some of your own savings and upgrade your career first. A woman’s personal finances are her safety net and a huge source of freedom to do whatever the eff she wants. I hope you can establish that for yourself first if you have the option to. Invest your savings so your money continues to grow. Depending on how complex your marriage is (shared assets, kids/custody) you might be better off hiring a lawyer, so that would be another cost to factor in. Most provide free consultations and it would be worth your while to explain your situation and ask for an estimate so you can budget for one.

Anyway, I hope you get to pursue your divorce and that if you don’t have to rush out of it then at least it can be used for a stepping stone to level up.
