Give them enough rope to hang themselves.

Don’t lead the conversation aggressively, or feel the need to fill in silences.

Encourage him to elaborate, or go into detail when he makes comments that you’re curious about. People love to talk about themselves, and when they get on a role their truer selves come out.

Give him space to fill, step in, ask questions, show interests etc.

Watch his body language, physical tics/signs of nervousness or bravado.

Listen to how he talks about friends, family, exes. This reveals how he feels about loved ones or people who play key roles in his life. Since you’re considering being one of those key people this matters.

What how he engages with wait staff, whether he’s eyeing other women, checking his phone, looking distracted. How does he act when you talk? Is he responsive, attentive, empathetic?

Yeah think the bigger thing is listening. Keeping a dating journal can help you analyze and possibly see patterns where you otherwise wouldn’t. Help you see things due to you reflecting on it in a more neutral state later.

Otherwise focus on open ended (can’t be answered with yes/no) questions. And make sure the questions aren’t leading.

For example, asking “are you looking for a relationship?” Is a closed question AND is a leading question (he can probably gauge from your tone that you want a relationship when you ask that question). Instead ask: “what are you looking for?”
