hello,
I live in the city (Not USA), which isn't as open and greeting as for example Europe is, or USA. Society is pretty snobbish, very small % of people want to make new friends via some activities. They prefer to be locked in their egg shell with the people they know, or get a new friend through their mutual friends.
For example, recently one of the girls i know, told me how someone approached her on the street and it was "pretty weird". When i asked, how is she going to meet her soulmate, she said definitely not being approached on the street. So, this is a little bit about the city i live in.
This is not a type of city where people just say hi on the street or smile when make an eye contact. This is not a single example. During an accidental eye contact, people usually look away. And if you smile, they creep out and look away.e.
There are this festivals and art spaces, where i usually go to hang out with my friends - where everybody comes with a friend and gets locked in in their friend-comfort-zone. Approaching a girl that is with her friend, mostly will make her look at you like a weirdo/creep, involve in the conversation, but give you short answers, due to not feeling comfortable. They have a feeling of guilt.
The reason for this is its VERY important for people here - what will people think about them?
It even reminds me a moment from Horace and Pete TV show by Louis CK. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixw0wWLx8W8
Where the woman is being rude and bitchy to a guy, who just was trying to initiate the conversation.
What would be your suggestions on approaching and opening, in this type of environment? I'd appreciate hearing your ways of dealing with it.
