Blue Collar vs White Collar work

I do sales, but the company I work for has at least 10 guys making over $100k and are under 30.

At the company I’m at, HVAC techs literally go to someone’s house after they called us for repair. Tech goes out, finds a cracked heat exchanger and turns it over to sales. We go out and sell $10k system, tech gets 2% of that sale plus his $20+ an hour.

We have drain techs who go out and unclog toilets. If it’s a consistent issue, they turn it over to a sewer salesman that comes out and cameras the line for bellies/roots/separations. Salesman sells a sewer for $15k, 2% to the tech.

Don’t even get me started about electricians. Those fuckers can practically print money.

The other great thing I’ve noticed about trades is you have some serious job security if you’re even halfway decent. A good tech will generate much more money for a company than a good salesman will every time and they know it. The only thing I’ve seen people get fired for is side work and being fucked up while driving. I’ve seen salesman get fired on the spot for answering their phone wrong.

It’s a great gig if you find the right company to work for.

Do what makes you happy man. Don't let anyone tell you "THIS IS BETTER."

Just because college works for some people, doesn't mean it's for you. College is a wonderful thing, and people who want to go should go. But if you want to work blue collar, outside, then that's admirable, and just as valid as a white collar job.

I'm not going to say one way or another what you should do, because I'm not you.

I love my blue collar welder/fabricator job. The white collar guys might make a little more money but 90% of them are complete pussies. It makes me feel good knowing I work hard, get dirty, get hurt, that I have skills that literally build our world.

I'd feel like the biggest Cuck ever if I sat at a computer all day clicking keys and making mind numbing phone calls about useless business shit. Going to stupid ass meetings just to hear Lisa from Accounting run her mouth about the shitty coffee machine. Everybody is fake. Everybody has to play nice.

Come to blue collar level and your coworker relationships become much more meaningful. Me and my guys fucking slay each other in the shop all day and it's the best.

But that's just me.

College math is a hurdle most can overcome(I squicked through alegebra and stats via luck and tutors) but college as a whole can be an expensive/pointless endeavor if you don’t have a clear goal/career in mind. I’d advise people who want a bachelor’s degree to avoid community colleges for various reasons but that may be a topic for another post.

If your dad is a contractor he probably knows different plumbers, carpenters etc who would probably let you job shadow to get a feel for the different fields.

There is a certain prestige to jobs that goes beyond cash(machinists can also make 6 figures but won’t make panties drop like a doctor/lawyer/pilot) but definitely go for the trades if you don’t like offices.

Take a class in machining. Excellent money and job security to be made. Math in machining is adding or subtracting , and calculating cutter RPM. There are plenty of online calculators for that stuff. A lot of people handle this kind of concrete, practical math much better than conceptual stuff.

Despite what you might think, programming in most cases doesn't require much math. However it does require a logical systematic problem solving mentality. Making six figures in programming isn't out of the question, especially if you know how to program automation equipment.

Do what you enjoy the best and do the best damn job at it. You will gain respect from everyone on whatever you choose. This is coming from a white collar individual.
