I understand the concept of hypergamy and how it is beneficial both for the individual woman and the progression of society. However it seems like hypergamy can be somewhat flawed.

In my case my gf of over 5 years decided to leave me after a couple days of meeting and flirting with a guy that is, in my opinion, below me in terms of SMV. I judge this based on his frequent drug, alcohol and cigarette use, his inability to spell basic words and the fact that he is about 5' 6" and not nearly as athletic/muscular or good looking as me (trying to be objective about it). My gf is also about 2-3 notches below me in terms of SMV. It wasn’t always this way as when she was a teenager she was absolutely stunning, but she developed an autoimmune disease that caused her to lose her long hair and healthy skin. However I am a loyal person and we still had frequent, dually fulfilling sex so I was happy with her and pushed aside my instinctual polygamous desires (if she got overweight I probably would have left her if she didn't try to fix it, but her losing her beauty was out of her control and she will probably get it back someday).

My point of digressing is to show that I am not bitter towards the circumstances. I’m in monk mode right now, and while I am disappointed that I lost a partner that was a virgin before me, I am excited for the opportunity I have had to grow in the last month and going forward. I never really had an anger phase when I learned about TRP 3 weeks ago. I felt excited to continuously better my life and find a quality mate and have more control in my relationships. I’m left with more of a curiosity about the drawbacks of hypergamy because it seems like it can happen even when the physical conditions make it extremely unlikely.

If hypergamy is based on getting the best genes for her offspring, why would they want someone who frequently pollutes their body and thus their sperm, and has less attractive qualities than their former mate?
