Comp Sci vs Engineer

If your passion is apps go comp sci. in school you will be able to do projects start to finish but in industry you will have one part of a larger picture. both have great oppertunites

You mean computer science versus computer engineer? Honestly there isn't much difference from an employability perspective. They will take the same programming course load, but computer science will take more abstract math/algorithm courses, and engineer will take more hardware/electrical engineer coursework. Take digital logic asap and if you like that do engineering.

I have both degrees. They are very similar. I would say it depends on the school and how good their respective programs are. Hypothetically assuming they are ranked identically, I recommend going with the engineering degree, since it is more focused on software (practical side) and less on the science/theory.

Go computer science. Mechanical engineer here (pretty good at computers too).

BUT don't fall into the geek culture.

I switched out of Mechanical Engineering to Computer Science. I would not double major, there are too few overlapping courses (though you could double major if you wanted to do EE and CS). CS wins big time, to me

Pros of CS over Engineering

Better solo opportunities
Booming industry
Damn near every company uses computers nowadays
Instant "real" world results. Engineering? A very slow process to really do anything

Cons

You have to read other people's code, a miserable activity
CS attracts even less girls and more socially awkward guys than engineering

If you want to actually build things and do large projects, engineering is not for you. Just acquire some mechanical skills and learn welding as well as carpentry, then DIY on your own time

Since you posted this to asktrp I assume you want more of a red pill response to your question. IMO - I would go the engineering route first. You can always learn to develop apps in your spare or free time but what has more benefit on society and what will give you fundamentals and theory to work off when making apps of social significance? I believe that engineering is the more intellectual of the two and would provide a better base for future avenues. Engineers are also always needed. What type of engineering? I assume not Computer engineering as that's more electrical engineering.
