Yeah it can, and you can build a decent functional body over a long period of time.

Although actual lifting in the gym will yield far quicker aesthetic results, which result in far better results in your life outside of the gym.

Of course, if you go about them properly you'll get jacked AND you can do cool skills like handstand pushups.

Typically skinny guys get into calisthenics because it's easier for them. They stay light and skinny due to the way they train. So if you do this correctly you should be increasing the intensity of the exercises. Think of stuff like planche progressions, weighted pullups, weighted dips, etc.

They can. I used to do the "you are your own gym" workout. It was good but I saw results a lot faster when I stated doing barbell lifts in the gym.

They can, but it somewhat depends on what you're doing. Think of the purpose of the part of your body you're trying to work. When you do a pushup, your chest and arms are moving a large portion of your body weight, they're not really meant for that so it IS effective resistance.

Now I see people do those "squat challenges" and whatnot. In that case there's no resistance, your legs are meant to move your body, it's essentially waving your arms.

They're both resistance training, if that's what you're asking.

Sort of, I view it more of a way of getting ridiculously strong in relation to your own body weight. Can't bench much but can do one arm pull ups and hand stand pushups. I think a lot of it is made fancy, like the random ninja moves you typically see for views(Instagram, Facebook, YouTube) and attention.

Similar to rock climbing, where your ability is based on technique and arguably more importantly, how strong you are in ratio to your body weight.

Hell yeah brother. Check out YouTube channel FitnessFAQs if you want to see what calisthenics is capable of building.

All else equal, weights will be more expedient for bodybuilding. But calisthenics is way more fun and interesting imo.

Combine with barbell squats and deadlifts for best results.

The problem with calisthenics is, besides the basic movements that the military uses, moves like 1-hand pull-ups and muscle-ups just take too much bloody time to develop. I train for aesthetics, not to brag about my bench press or to show off a flashy calisthenic move on the street.

The end goals behind lifting are to:

  1. Achieving your maximum muscular potential......fewer people challenge you.......girls' eyes light up when they look at you.

  2. Aesthetics......that V-shape, 1.618 ratio (shoulders : waist), chiseled jawline.

  3. Develop discipline.

  4. Be in a good mood when you look absolutely fabulous 24x7x365.

  5. High amounts of energy.

  6. Really HARD erections and ability to pound a 120 lb female up against the wall for 20 minutes.

To get bigger and stronger you need progressive resistance.

Weights, generally speaking, have a less steep learning curve, and offer easier resistance progression, than the more advanced calisthenics required to move beyond baseline fitness.

It's better than nothing, but I didn't get any real aesthetic results when I did it.

No.
