Was in a three month relationship with a girl (I'm merely 19, young as fuck).
I always exhibited a lot of AF traits but never BB. For instance, she would give me two or three calls a day and I’d ignore all of them because I’d actually be working. She’d work very hard to win my approval and affection (e.g. making me arts and crafts and cooking for me) and I guess I got used to it. She confessed that she’s madly in love with me, that she can’t lose me, and that she’ll do anything that’ll make me happy.
Recently I initiated that I wasn’t really happy with the relationship (a mistake on my part), and she initiated the breakup, saying that she’s given so much to this relationship but hardly getting anything out of it (i.e. my attention/validation).
If I though I did nothing wrong, the solution would be simple, to just thank her for the three months and move on. No strings attached.
But the thing is that I did do something wrong (or think I did). I exhibited only AF traits but never any BB traits (security, protection). I never pay for dates for instance (and I still don’t), and I rarely do favors for the girl, but only used her for sex (which in hindsight was a bit selfish). Due to the fact that I genuinely think I did something wrong, I apologized to her face-to-face, explained where I’m coming from (which she understood), and told her that “I’ve said what I needed to say, and you’re free to walk away from this now” (sub communicating that I won’t try to win her back).
I genuinely felt like I made a mistake, and hence apologized and took responsibility. She wants to get back together, to give it a second chance. I do too. But what should I do now — how have the power dynamics changed? She claims that she merely “likes me” now instead of being “madly in love with me” (perhaps her hamster working to prevent her from being hurt again) — and now, she probably wouldn’t WORK for this relationship as hard as before. While we’re back together now, she’s started to push her luck and make demands like “don’t end calls so early or hangup on me”, “why don’t you ever respond to my texts”, etc etc. Frankly, after that hassle (with her breaking up with me), I’m uncertain with how I feel.
I believe the logical TRP answer here is to focus on yourself. Treat this relationship less seriously than the first time around (hell, I’m only 19, too young for commitment). Frame it as me giving her a second chance (so she has to step her game up and work harder). I intend to give it two weeks — if there’s no progress (her attraction does not increase, no sex, etc), I’m moving on.
