You'll never stick with an instrument you really don't want to play. It seems to me, that you would like to play the piano, but are thinking about guitar to get chicks. That's nonsense.

A 300 dollar piano is gonna sound like shit. I don't know enough about guitars, but I bet it's the same.

Also, it's sad you're posting this here. Play an instrument for the love of music, not some ploy to get women.

You can carry a guitar around. My guitar got me laid last night.

But my old room mate was a dueling piano player. He was good, but not great. He made $300/ night (plus another $200 or so in tips). If you can play the piano you can earn a living.

I'll also back up what therealjoben said. Masterfull technique is lost on non-musicians, but if you can sing you have your own entry door to their feelz.

If you're gonna do this to pick up chicks (which is exactly why you're doing it), you cant exactly bring a piano out with you can you?

That being said, you'll fail at both if women are your only reason (it is) for picking up an instrument, a lot of hours go into learning how to play

buy a digital piano (with weighted keys, NOT a keyboard) $300 should be fine, learn piano and music theory.

Guitar and learn enough to become a rhythm player in a band. Work on your dance moves with the guitar (cause most chumps sit there looking bored as hell) and pull hella chicks at shows if you're good and in to it. It's easy and your SMV is on full display, you are the star of the night, everyone is looking at you, make the most of it go 100%. As a guitar player:

If you are doing it for chicks dont buy anything . It will feel much better.

If you want a piano you need atleast 600-700$ for a good piano. Head to /r/piano to get an idea.

Guitars are much cheaper and you can find good deals with 300$ ..

Leaving the impressing aside try to play both instruments(go to your local shop) and see what you dig.

Whichever one you're better at. Guitar's synonymous with douchey panty-droppers, but if you're better at piano, go do that instead. Or any other instrument besides the recorder or the nose flute.

Guitar. Its portable and I found it really easy to learn.

I play the acoustic and found that girls prefer guys who are able to sing. I never sang when I played guitar. I played complicated finger style songs and women wouldn't really show any interest, but when I started learning how to sing I got their interest.

So learn how to sing as well
