Help me define "frame".

frame is a very important idea but a lot of RP guys don't really understand the concept and mix up the idea of one particular type of frame with the idea of frame itself.

first understand that reality is simply too large and complicated for us to directly understand exactly what is going on at any particular time. our brains are flooded with too much information. we have to filter out all the extraneous and unimportant information and dumb down reality into a much simpler mental model.

the frame is the information that an observer subconsciously uses to try to understand what is happening in a particular situation. you quickly gather some clues and and compare them to past experiences and then come up with a mental model about what is happening. and you will assume that this mental model corresponds to reality, occasionally tweaking it based on new information.

for all intents and purposes, this mental model IS your reality. if you're happy, it's because something about the mental model is pleasing to you. if you are afraid, it's because the mental model is telling you that you are in a dangerous situation. if you see a belt on the floor and jump back, it's because the frame of seeing an object similar in size and shape to a snake led to you an inaccurate mental model of reality where there is a snake on the floor. you instinctively jumped back because snakes are potentially dangerous. in reality, the belt is harmless. but your behavior isn't based directly on reality, it's based on an observed frame of reality that is never completely accurate.

another example: if you walk into a room and there is an older man in a nice suit yelling at a younger man wearing a polo shirt and khakis. you will probably assume something that the older man is the boss and the younger man is a lower level employee. the behavior, body language, and physical appearance of the two men form the frame that leads you to this assumption. in reality, it could be anything. maybe they are actors rehearsing for a scene. maybe they are a gay couple having a lovers quarrel. who knows.

the reason frame is so important for RP guys (and anyone interested in being more persuasive) is that once you understand frame, you can start to consciously manipulate frame. and by manipulating frame, you can manipulate how other people interpret whatever is happening in a particular scenario. you can consciously control their "reality"

the type of frame controlling that most RP articles describe is one that leads observers to mentally model you as a dominant, confident alpha male. you create this frame by showing traits that people frequently assume are displayed by dominant, confident alpha males. the stereotypical alpha male has dominant body language, upright posture, loud and deep voice, tall and muscular body, etc. the more of these traits that you show, the more likely it is that other people will assume you actually are a powerful alpha male. in reality you could be a timid, fearful, submissive man but people won't know that unless you slip up and some non-alpha clues leak out, breaking the alpha male frame.

it's much harder to successfully maintain a frame the further it gets from the real world. if you are really just a total omega loser, you better be a damn good actor if you're trying to frame yourself as a badass successful alpha male.

one of the ways to improve your effectiveness in framing yourself in a certain way is similar to method acting techniques used by real actors. if you tell yourself that you really are a badass alpha male, it makes it much more effective when you try to act like one. you get into the right mindset and the alpha male type behaviors are a lot more natural for you. this is the root of faking it until you make it and the more specific meaning of "frame" used by a lot of RP guys that involves a really strong, unshakeable inner belief in yourself. you convince yourself that you're an alpha male, so you start acting like an alpha male, other people start seeing your behavior and they start believing that you actually are an alpha male and you start getting treated like an alpha male which helps to reinforce your internal alpha male mindset.

I've always thought "composure" is another good word. A little different but still a good descriptive word.

Frame

The border that encapsulates the frame-owners opinions of the world.

Note that this is not the same as how the world actually is, nor is it how other people see the world necessarily. But the frame-owner can convince other people to perceive the world the way he does. This action is often referred to as entering frame.

The concept of 'Frame' is one thing.
As far as translating the word, I've always pictured it as a picture frame.
It is the frame around the world you live in, and others get to join you in if you choose to allow it.
