Your response: "Yeah, that really does suck." with no given advice or offers of help. Empathy but no advice or help. It doesn't cost you much to show empathy--no touchy feely crap, just sincerity. Keep in mind, for you as a man to truly empathize, you have an almost unbearable need to want to help or give advice. This is what you do with male friends. But because you can't with women, because they will be dissatisfied if you do, you can't really empathize with them on the same level as you would a close male friend. So in the end, half-hearted empathy is enough to satisfy women and doesn't really cost you much in time and effort.

If you help, it must be because you're practically doing it for your own selfish reasons...and...she must be aware of this! She should be thinking, "He's not helping so much for my sake but for his own personal reasons. I get the feeling he would do this for anyone." She has to have the realization you're doing this for yourself rather than for her, e.g. you're doing this because you can't stand such an injustice to anyone as opposed to you're doing to keep her around.
