I see many people use the term to describe simply a promiscuous female. I understand why a word with such psychological power and punch used to be used in that manner back before the introduction of effective contraception. Single motherhood isn't ideal for a kids life and society understandably discouraged it.

Where I don't feel comfortable with the word is in describing a single modern promiscuous women. I don't agree with shaming someone for acting out what they enjoy, when it is relatively victimless. Sure I expect them to be aware of potential consequence and the effects it may later have on their dating life but I don't see a reason for such anger or hate directed at them.

To me a slut is a girl who uses her own sexuality and promiscuity for her own ends whilst simultaneously hurting someone else. E.g cheating, firting with other men to make a bf jealous. To me those girls are the real sluts and deserved to be shamed.

I just find that dual use of the term carries an impression of hate or anger at some women when it isn't intended. The implication of this being that slut shaming doesn't have the impact it should on women who deserve it and that it can really hurts girls who don't- which can lead to single guys getting laid less or becoming the victim of false rape accusations. Sure in a ltr we wan't a girl who hasn't been around the block but the use of the word slut often seems counterproductive.

What is the opinion of you guys on this? Should we move away from the old definition?
