In a nutshell, it is an exercise in letting go of all the gears spinning in your head and being aware of yourself and your environment.

Try sitting somewhere comfortable, alone. Focus on your breathing. Breath in, breath out, get a rhythm. Whatever you're thinking about, let it go. If something else pops into your head, let it go. Every time you catch yourself thinking something, relax and let it go. Practice allowing silence inside your head.

Congratulations, you are now meditating.

This.

Basically when you're thinking, notice it. And then put your attention on something else, like your breath, or something to sort of look at. Sit down and do this for a set amount of time.

The idea is not to be so identified with your thoughts. Or your fears, or whatever.

There are different style of meditation that work for different people, at different times. So you can explore a bit.

It sometimes helps if you meet someone who seems good at it already. You could read a bit from Marcus Aurelius, or a Buddhist teacher or something. Find something you like.

Try not to fall for the misconception that you have to force yourself to think of nothingness. Its more like letting your thoughts pass by, I think of it like sitting on a banking and watching my thoughts idly pass by like boats on a canal

Sit.
