If you are a healthy male between 18 to 45, You should have following objective goal as a good benchmark of strength and good built.

2x squat

2.5x dead lift

1x overhead press

1.5x bench

where x is your body weight. This goal will take time depending upon how strong you already are. If you have never lifted before, it is going to take 1.5 to 2 years on linear progression to get there. But at the end you would have added so much muscles on your frame, you will be the strongest guy in a room.Being strong and muscular is very masculine and dominating.

Following the right training is the most important part and it has been covered before on the main sub Reddit. I would recommend you starting strength program. If you are in USA try finding SS gym. You can have online coaching at barbell logic for the same program

3 Days a week minimum for me. About an hour and 15 minutes per session. Sometimes more if I have time.

You should aim to be at the stage where you look at 95% of men and think "look at that weak little pussy". If you think other men's arms are a normal size you need to lift more.

~48 hrs of recovery per muscle group is optimal. So a full body session 3x per week is sufficient. A 2-day split (4 days per week) is pretty good too.

I definitely don’t subscribe to the seven days a week nonsense (given that you take fitness seriously and do it properly). Personally, I like to go hard in the gym but have 3 days off to recover because realistically very few people eat or sleep enough to sustain that bodybuilder regiment you see lorded on most fitness sites because of work and what not. The harder and more frequently you train, the slower your progress will be and the shittier you’ll feel; you’re also more likely to burn out and/or plateau. I did that in my early 20’s when I didn’t know what I was doing. I was doing the stereotypical Arnold routine spanning every day of the week and couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t gaining much mass (past a certain point, got frustrated and bored with it and burned out for a while).

About a six months ago, I decided to get back into it but with a different approach.

My diet is high calorie, mostly Keto but not strict about it—usually go back and fourth between Keto and Paleo. I workout usually every other day. I go super hard in the gym every other day, obviously different muscle groups, and I’ve already put on 20 lbs more than I was when I stopped the first time and I feel so much better and can lift so much more.

TL;DR... Intesity > frequency

This is a hard question to answer. Are you asking because you have no idea where you're at in your level of fitness or are you asking as a purely philosophical question? The philosophical answer is that you lift enough to get you where you need to be.

If you want to look like a movie star you'll probably need to track your macros properly, train for 5 years on a periodized bodybuilding / mass gaining and cutting program and then add in some Vitamin T when you've exhausted your natural limits.

If you wanna look beach ready and better than 90% of dudes, cut down until you can see abs while doing a strength program and then find your maintenance calories and slowly bulk until you can't see abs, and repeat until satisfied. (Advice taken from Renaissance periodization)

If you're looking for a bare minimum I would say 2x / week, but thats under the presumption you're active in a physical job, playing sports or doing a martial art and it's taxing your recovery systems. You want to lift as much as you can such that you are hitting 0% (but not going past that) on your energy bar each week. Joe Rogan thinks of humans as leaky batteries, where if there's excess fuel left in the tank, it seeps out and messes with the other systems. I work as a sleep therapist and often use this metaphor to encourage my patients who are too anxious and restless to be more active and improve their sleep.

At the end of the day this is a question of frame. You need to be the one to determine the ends of your lifting based on the goals you want to achieve and the life you want to live. We say lifting is non negotiable because modern Neuroscience research, TRP sidebar, and the ancient Romans have taught us that our minds and bodies are linked, and our mental health is highly linked to our personal health. Everyone has different goals. What's your ideal body goal? Lifting helps us achieve a body and there is a variety of different bodies but here's the thing, they all help you get what you are looking for. Whether it be internal validation, certain kinds of chicks, athleticism for a sport, etc

You wanna be the next Mr Olympia? Keep on lifting and permabulk. Wanna look thuggish and sleek? Start cutting while lifting
