If you're for some uncomfortable just saying "I'm not going to talk about that" then just use a light humour to make it less confrontational.
No maths at the table.

I prefer to just be straight up and use some variation of "you aren't among the people that get to ask that question". Depends on who and what they ask. Best mate asks about girl, gets answer. Friend of a friend, gets smart arse answer. Someone I don't like, gets told to focus on his own life.
Money specifically always has an easy response, usually just stick with "enough" for most questions. How much I earn "enough" how much rent I pay "too much".

People always have criteria for judging you, and the more rational the person is, the more this person will be able to quantify you.
You shouldn't bother this man. Your interactions are exchanges of something, always.
Another thing I might add is, many people have remarkably reasonable reasons to ask you for numbers, mainly money and weights. It's not necessarily a pissing contest there, but well, you know your folks.

Anyway, as for what to ask, people already said here.

If someone asks u how much you make, you don't have to give them the answer. Its your business alone to know really, unless u willingly want to share that info with someone. They ask, you reply "don't worry about that" "I'm getting by" "nothing too crazy" "I make enough for now" or if you're ready to turn up "that don't fucking concern you son. Mind your bitch ass business".

I use "reductio ad absurdum" if it can be, linguistically speaking, called like that (i diferentiate it from A&A). Basically my answer is always trivial to the point of absurdity. If I do it correctly the guy is dazzled and left thinking whereas if you act overtly salty you show weakness. Grow thick skin when it comes to male shit tests; as you improve they become more and more frequent.

E.g. Q: Did you fuck Melissa? A: Plenty of fish in the sea, most of them wet. I like my salmon dry and cooked.

Made this up as im writing but the technique is easier to apply for the less eloquent than a&a because you can answer literally anything as long as its not directly related&absurd. Whatever comes in you mind. Just remember delivery is crucial, maintain eye contact, be serious. No hidden sarcasm! If the guy proceeds questioning, tell him you see he's interested and that you'll set him up for a date with Melissa. Open the phone and start writing a message; cowards will chicken out immediately and change subject.
