Approached a HB7 today at the co-op I shop at. Make a small comment about the coffee she is drinking and continue shopping. Then approach her again on my way out. Chit chat for a minute (I was nervous and likely it showed a bit) and then ask "Would you like to get a drink while you're in town?" (She was clearly married, and also visiting town on a job hunt)

Her response: "I don't think I would"

To me, this was checkmate. I thanked her for the direct answer and left.

My question: Was there a counter punch here, or is that actually checkmate? It seems a fine line between the confident/cocky guy and the obnoxious douche who continues to pester married women after they have politely said no.
