Speaking only in terms of biology, sex isn't commitmentless on our part. Even if we don't have to persuade a girl to have sex with us, there's still the refractery period, and on top of that, our semen is less potent for a few days, meaning we might decrease the chances of getting a more satisfactory woman pregnant if the opportunity presents itself within the next few days. Also having sex with an unatractive woman might negatively impact preselection, affecting your chances of hooking up with more desirable girls. These are just my wild guesses.

Still, I think there are more men than would admit it, who would quietly take a girl up on her offer to have sex, even if she wasn't that attractive, if it was super easy, e.g. you're in college, a girl you don't find attractive comes over for whatever reason, very forwardly comes onto you, nobody will know, and you weren't going to do anything besides jack off and go to bed anyways.

Mating strategies in men and women really do interest me, but it can be difficult to come to a hard science based conclusion, since many people who have theories also have an accompanying agenda. I think women do tend to be more selected, because they need to carry children for so long, and nurse them, but I also agree with Chris Ryan's position on sperm competition also being a factor, meaning for women, it's in their best interest to be more selective and choose high SMV males, but to then sleep with more than one of those men.

While it is true that women have more biological investment into reproduction, the effort that men make is not unsubstantial. Men must produce millions of sperm in order for a single sperm to have a reasonable chance of impregnating a female. These sperms must have good shape and motility to permeate the egg. Therefore, while we should expect men to be less sexually selective than woman, a man still needs to consider whether the energy (food, resources) he used to produce his sperm is worth using for impregnating a particular female. What may be individually variable is our perception of which females are fertile and likely to produce healthy children (that can survive themselves to reproductive age) if impregnated by us.

Men can be very picky. It's only the more desperate men who are not. If you've got better ways to be happy and better options for women there's no reason to go slumming
