I’ve been self employed most of my career. While I’m not trained in sales, a large portion of my career involves negotiating deals; sometimes with multiple parties involved. This applies whether you are selling a product or services. Here are some things I’ve learned.
Trust - People want to trust you. Work on building trust with the people you’ll be negotiating with. Find some common ground, some way for them to identify with you.
Let them win - Understand that people feel better about a deal when they feel like they’ve won something. Sometimes you lose a battle so you can win the war. I’ve always found that a long term win pays off more than a short term win. Very Simple Example: you want $200 for a TV you’re selling. You lost an ad for $250, negotiate to $200. Another example might be that you offer easier payment arrangements. The options are endless.
Silence is golden - Know when to be silent during negotiating. Sometimes it’s uncomfortable, but you don’t always have to let the other side know where you stand.
Walk away - Learn that it’s okay to walk away from a deal. It increases your value. It can create the illusion of smaller supply and greater demand.
Confidence - Be confident in what you’re selling. BELIEVE that’s it’s the absolute best available. Set yourself or your product apart.
