I have this issue when it comes to maintaining eye contact during a conversation. It seems that whenever I maintain eye contact for a short period, I can't focus on what the other person is saying or even what I want to say. Whenever I realize I'm not registering what the person is saying it usually causes me to break eye contact, because I realize I won't be able to properly respond to that they are saying; I feel like if I can get past this sticking point I'll be able to keep eye contact until they are finished speaking and maintain it when it's my turn to respond. If it's me that's speaking I usually have to look off into the distance with occasional short glances at the person, which seems to really affect my ability to keep people engaged. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and managed to overcome it. I'm pretty sure there's a underlying issue and a way to work on this, I just can't figure out what it is.
