You don't want to think you're "trying hard" with eye contact.

It should be something that appears to be effortless.

If you are talking to them always maintain eye contact. If you are looking at them from across the bar you can maintain like a second or two and then raise your eyebrows or do like a wiggly eye brow thing and see if they respond. Don’t just stare at girls you aren’t talking to for 15+ seconds.

You want to get so used to eye contact that you don't have to think about it. I mean you don't have to stare at them 24/7.

Eye contact gets weird when you don't emote with it. Imagine seeing someone from far away and just holding eye contact for 15 seconds as you walk up expressionless. Kinda weird right? The solution as others said is to give an eyebrow raise/flash and smile.

If you're talking about in conversation it's more important to have eye contact while listening with a little looking away. Talking can make someone feel weird if you hold eye contact too long so do short breaks looking slightly to the side like you would if you're thinking. However when making a point you want to have good eye contact.

It's something you have to feel out, the person you are talking to will have stutters and lose their train of thought if you're going too strong. Too weak makes them feel like you're not listening so they may do attention grabbing things more such as touching or raising and lowering their voice
