I am training MMA and BJJ and I always recommend it.

Do not, as akready suggested, start doing both. That is too much in the beginning and you'll set yourself up for injuries.

Especially fighting is very intense and will stress your body unusually much. It'll take anywhere from six to twelve months for your body to fully adapt.

So first start to learn to fight, and then, when you can do a higher pensum without problems, you can start to.incorporate lifting, preferably some strength building program like stronglifts 5x5.

You could do it the other way around, but I think it inferior, since the aquired strength is more like an addon and you will need functional muscles for fighting, that lifting will not give you.

You should be doing both lifting/physical conditioning and fighting (grappling and/or striking). You can go somewhere if you replace lifting with fighting, but you will always behind those who put in the extra work. Don't constrict yourself only to lifting, you can also consider bodyweight fitness, sprinting/calisthenics, bouldering, etc.

My personal favourite, although a bit expensive to get into, is BJJ. You can do it both with or without a uniform. It teaches you how to move your body in ways you didn't know and how easily most people are handled (1-on-1) if things get confrontational. All in all it just boosts your confidence.

Two decent reasons to lift instead of fight that may or may not apply to you:

1) You're skinnier than you want and want to bulk on some muscle.

2) Lifting will give you more of a hormonal boost (testosterone, etc), which supports applying a lot of RP philosophy. (Then again, knowing you can kick 99% of the populations ass in a fight might give a similar effect for frame).

Since my gym has both an open weight room and boxing/kickboxing/HIIT classes in the membership, I opted to lift as well as do the boxing classes for the summer at least.

The classes aren't the same as straight up fighting, but it's efficient - get cardio/HIIT/conditioning in on the bag while also learning the basics of striking before transitioning to a full on fighting/sparring environment (where the first few months you'd just be trying to learn the basics and movements anyway).

I go the gym and do Karate and love it. Take up a discipline as you please although I will admit Muay Thai and BJJ are much more practical and effective in a real fight scenario but if you've always wanted to get a Black belt in TKD or something then go for it.

In my mma training gym you can also use all muscle training stations there. Maybe there is something similar in your area.

I recomend doing fight sport. Its not that expensive (for me approximately 50EUR for Stuff and 20 EUR per month) and a good boost for your self esteem. But for your body development its more like endurance sport than muscle training. I use 2 dumbels at home for muscle gaining.

Really boils down to the type of body you want. If you want mass muscle and strength, lift. If you want conditioning and tone and fucntionality, train to fight.

You can literally just use common household items and body weight resistance techniques to gain muscle. There was a guy in the 50's who won Mr Universe while only using one 45 lbs. dumbbell (my facts may be slightly off, but the point is still true). I would pay for lessons. The boost in confidence will improve your SMV, you'll gain a skill, and then you can possibly return to the proper gym in six months or so.

You could just do a minimalist routine a couple times a week.
