I have dislocated both shoulders from playing rugby in college. I will say that you can get past it but it takes time. In fact, I’d say lifting will improve your chances of recovery, but only if done in a controlled fashion. As others have stated, you have to start light and use perfect form in slow controlled movements. Use a barbell for overhead presses to give yourself stability to begin with. Eventually, you may be able to go back to using dumbbells, if you choose.

Of course, make sure you stretch and do whatever physical therapy they recommend for you. Don’t rush the process and make sure you swallow that ego. Good luck.

I recommend seeing a physical therapist with certifications from Functional Range Seminars to work on exercises to bullet-proof your shoulder.

Having already had a dislocation puts you at high risk for another dislocation, unless you do the proper rehab/prehab.

ease your way into isolation exercises.

Start off with low weight and slowly and consciously move your way up.

If you feel like anything is off, stop completely and just do some cardio for now until you can try again in a few days.
