I have just finished my first semester of college. I saw a post a while back on this subreddit about dealing with stress. One of the comments pointed out that OP most likely wasn’t doing what he wanted to do during the day. This really hit the nail on the head for me. I’ve suffered from borderline depression this semester and I think it’s because of this. In addition, I really have no interest in any of the degrees offered by my college, career-wise. I’ve recently come to the realization that a job in which I’m working in an office or on a computer would be detrimental to my mental health. The idea of working with my hands is extremely appealing to me.

For this reason, I’m strongly thinking about dropping out of college. I’m going to give it at least one more semester. I’m considering taking up a trade, specifically welding, carpentry (also considering this as more of a hobby), or plumbing. My hobbies are snowboarding and canoe trips/camping but I have a strong interest in mountain climbing, and travelling. Ideally my career would be one where I would have the flexibility in my schedule to indulge in these hobbies.

I have three questions:

  1. Do any of you have any experience with these trades and could tell me a little more about them/where can I learn more about what its like to work in these types of jobs?

  2. What quality of life can I expect from a $30,000-$50,000 annual salary on a strict budget (eventually I would like to have a wife and 1, maybe 2, kids)?

  3. What are some other career moves I could be looking into other than a trade?
