This might sound weird and probably not the best idea, but when i am walking toward some shady character I go out of my way to slowly walk towards their side of the sidewalk, almost skimming them by the time i get to them. Throws them completely off and takes any thought of them attacking you and turns it around. Of course this can backfire and I am ready to escalate if needed (unless any weapons), but it has never failed, and the expressions are humorous. I usually get a respectful head tip as they pass. Had too many confrontations in city growing up and just DGAF much, I would rather get beaten and keep my shit than give it willingly, so keep that in mind that I have that look as well when walking lol. Mostly effective up to 2 people, more than that i would not do.

Don't take valuables with you when going to the gym.

I walk to my gym every morning and there are seedy people out there. But I can't avoid it, its just a 2 block walk so there is no point in driving. I only bring a water bottle and a stopwatch.

No phone. No wallet.

Throw away wallet is the only thing I can think of that would've helped. Buy a cheap ten dollar wallet and put $20 in there in smaller bills (to make it look full) and some of those "credit cards" they mail you all the time as ads. I've had to use it once ever, and it worked chuck it down and just bolt the other way. Carrying a gun and learning self defense are good options if there's no way out but always run first, your safety is much more valuable than your dignity/money. Just imagine if that knife had ended up in the wrong place on you or your brother. Instead of getting a new phone your life would be ruined. Also move the fuck out of the ghetto ASAP.

I've been mugged once when I was plastered, and got a scar from being pistol whipped hard across the face. Pro tip: just give them your shit. Replacing an Id and cancelling your cards is not that hard, and far better than getting beaten or shot. I knew a guy that got shot from resisting a mugger and it's just not worth it. You shouldnt be carrying too much cash anyways

I make sure I have enough weapons I can kill 4 attackers at a time.

Once I got jumped by 3. I stabbed them. They backed off.

not much you can do really, basiclly based on your area you might be fucked, I suggest to learn personal defense just in case, but something you can do is walk confidently like own that area, a lot of robbers will hesitate and will not pick on you, however I suggest you to not resist.

I profile extensively. If I get a bad feeling about someone I go to great lengths to avoid them. I've actually sprinted away from groups of people who were clearly approaching me with bad intentions. I also cross the street to avoid sketchy looking people when I'm walking through a city. Best way to avoid these situations is to bypass the people completely.

I also think carrying a weapon is a good idea if legal in your jurisdiction.
