Love isn't something you feel (emotion). Emotions come and go.

Love is something you do (choice). Or to an "enlightened" person, love is something you are (the "is-ness" of things, i.e., "Love is").

The parent's love for a child is natural, because the child is an extension of the parent (literally, same DNA). In the case of relationships, be with a person long enough and that person becomes an "extension" of you, and you start loving them the way you love yourself. Thus the magic ingredient to non-familial love? Time spent together.

It's different in different situations but our society has lumped "loving your dog/car/job" in with "loving your mum/gf/wife" etc

I think these guys have the right idea! The Ancient Greeks had at least 6 words for what we now days call "love"

Love is the collection of feelings you get as a result of the production of neurohypophysial hormones being made in your hypothalamus. Your body produces them to pair-bond you to a mating partner long enough to reproduce and rear the child to a relatively viable stage of life.
