What is the difference between soft next and silent treatment?

Silent treatment- childish game teenagers play, where you purposely ignore someone because you're butthurt.

Soft next- a reduction of attention to a certain person, with no hopes to get at them, or to "teach them a lesson". Simply because you don't need them in your life anymore. If a person you've nexted is still in your group of friends you don't need to completely ignore them, just don't go out of your way to do anything related to that person.

A soft next does not include snubbing someone when you encounter them in the hall, or crossing the street when they happen to be on the same sidewalk as you. The soft next does not preclude the common courtesies of human existence.

It means you spend little or no time, energy or money on them going forward. That includes any energy spent AVOIDING them.

If someone who has been soft nexted walks up to you and says, "Good afternoon, "you make eye contact, say, "Hey," and then go on about your business.

If you are giving them the silent treatment, they can talk to the side of your head all day and you'll pretend like they aren't there.

Silent treatment: Using your overt denial of affection to punish someone. Only works is this person needs your validation, causes healthy people to pursue stopping needing your validation.
Soft nexting: Refraining from investing your time and efforts in someone you don't feel gives you back as much as they should, so you can give it to someone who does. But without feeling the need to cut this person out because there is no threat.
