When do you stop going on dates but start hanging out at each other’s places instead?

Say you start seeing someone, how many dates do you go on before you start hanging out at each other’s places instead of going on dates? What’s the protocol people use here? After you’ve had sex the first time? After you go on three dates and you’ve already had sex? I don’t know when to stop going on dates...

Problem is I don’t have my own place right now, so I feel weird suggesting I come straight to a girl’s place. Otherwise I’d ask them to come over to mine after we’ve had sex once or twice. Any tips on how and when to transition from dates to hangouts, given my living situation?
