Workout outside

Running is for losing fat, unless you are sprinting or running uphill a lot, you won't gain significant amount of muscle.

There are lot of muscles that are really hard to train without the usual gym equipment. But you can be quite fit with just your bodyweight and couple of bars.

BUT! I see lot of newbies simply saying they dislike the atmosphere of the gym, that they want to distance themselves from the "gym-bro" culture, etc.

Guess what? That culture is not really bad at all, you are just intimidated by it now, since you are inferior to the people in there. Just go for it man, take some friends and lift. It's like doing that first cold approach - you say that you don't like it, that you prefer the "social circle game", that maybe you will start lightly with online dating first... Screw all that! Just go out of your comfort zone and embrace the sweat and grunting in there, it's good for you.

I agree. Go for it.

I met a male friend of mine (who was absolutely fit like you wouldn't believe).. and I asked him.. you go gym?

He said no.

Everything he did was by buying his own weights and equipment, knowing effective workouts (Youtube and Internet) and yes.. outdoor exercise as you've mentioned.

So, go for it man. Besides the sunlight and fresh air, you don't have to pay for a gym.. though you'll be missing out on the heavier equipment that gyms have. Pros and cons.

Edit: Plus, if there are women where you workout outside, that's a bonus.

I do both

I am in the base gym at 0430 each morning. Not many people there at the time. Do a PF on Saturdays early too.

In the evening, I haul out my sandbags and heavy punching bag to work out in my back yard. I enjoy the air and sun.

I used to take long walks/jogs, and when I came to chair/ bench I would do dips and pushups against them. Any horizontal bar I would do pull-ups. Certain areas I would do sit-ups... I made a very good "walking" exercise routine.

I feel you on this one. I don't like gyms (has nothing to do with intimidation) I just feel too caged up, plus I like to jump around and do weird kung-fuey/parkour type shit when I work out, so my backyard is the place. Whatever you do, just make sure it involves weights/bodyweight. Pure cardio won't build much muscle.

A little limited, but personally I love doing wind sprints.
