Hey, guys. Some guy is giving me shit at work and it's starting to effect my reputation. I want to repair the damage that has been done already and build a new reputation. I'll break down my situation and the steps I'm taking to improve it.
I've been EMS in NYC for two years and I haven't been the best at my job. I had some pretty traumatic jobs right out of the academy and then got seriously injured on the job, these issues along with a crazy sleep schedule left me a little unconfident in my skills and unenthusiastic about the my profession. I got a bit of a reputation for being spacey and not the best worker.
Afterwards, I made an effort to become better at my job and made a visible improvement. People responded and everything was cool. FAST FORWARD TO LAST WEEK: I have an off day after working a double shift on Christmas. I didn't check the ambulance before the tour started and was a little slow for the day, but I treated patients and still carried them with no issues.
My partner for that day started giving me shit for it IMMEDIATELY. He started saying I'm the new (insert station reject's name here) at the station and kept ragging on me. Meanwhile, I worked with him the week before and everything was totally fine. I told him "Hey, I know I'm having a bad day, but I'll be better next time and won't make these mistakes again. You know I'm normally a good partner." I thought that would be the end of it, but he kept teasing me about it when we were alone, to which I just joked around and gave him shit back, but then he started ragging on me at the station in front of our co-workers. I just laughed it off and threw some digs back at him, but I'm concerned it may effect my reputation going forward. He's really popular and charismatic at the station. How should I handle it the next time he publicly rags on me? I feel like just acting indifferent and throwing witty insults back at him isn't working
Here are the steps I'm taking in the future to address this issue:
- I'm showing up for work 20 minutes early from now on to check the ambulance and prepare for my tour. This way, my partners and lieutenants will be more confident in me.
- I'm going to work on my first aid skills and reread my protocols so I'm more knowledgeable and confident.
- Improve my sleep schedule so I don't have any more off days.
- I'm going to ingratiate myself more into station life and go to the occasional station hangout so people can see I'm a cool guy who doesn't deserve that reputation.
Thanks for reading, guys! I appreciate any lessons you have to teach me.
