I'm sure everyone watched the tragedy of the last three weeks of the NFL. The scab referees were unsure of themselves, inexperienced and had no control over the game. In short, no one respected them. Sound familiar?

Now consider the regular referees.

If you ask any sports fans to name a NFL referee, nine out of ten times they will name Ed Hochuli. He's a true alpha. He has a strong frame and makes his calls with confidence. Everyone knows he's there and he has complete control of the game and the respect of players and fans. Even if you don't like him, you respect that the "Adults are in charge" when he's there.

You want to be like Ed, strong physique and confident, not like the scab refs who were basically floundering all over the place. Ed's been a ref for many years, he didn't get to this point overnight.

Practice. It's cliched here but it's cliched for a reason, it works.

Lift weights. Just do it for six months and come back and say you don't feel better about yourself now.

Get awesome at a skill. Forget about working on weaknesses. Focus on your strengths. If you were coaching high school basketball, who gets the practice time, the starters or the reserves? The starters of course. Those are the guys who are the strength of the team. You don't completely ignore the reserves, but you don't spend inordinate time on them either. If you play guitar, get really good at it. If you yoyo, get awesome at it. Everyone has a skill, find yours and make your assignment to hone it.
