I'm in ridiculous situations often but I'm bad at telling the story to others. Generally I structure my stories by giving sequential details, but I want to change that. It's like just "telling" someone what happened rather than building up emotion, interest, mystery, etc.

I'm looking for recommendations for books or other resources that cover all the basics of conversational storytelling piece by piece. Like, how to structure the story, how much detail to include (what are generally the important bits?), delivery, how to capture attention... that sort of thing.

Also, how do you guys approach telling stories to others of funny things that've happened? Do you plan it out beforehand at all or do you deliver stories spontaneously and adjust on the fly?
