Just wanted to share some tips that have worked for me, they are easy to do, affordable and they can give you a whole new image. Other people who also ball on a budget feel free to share your pointers as well.
I guess my major tip is to look up the Goodwills in the nice suburbs in your area. Its really that simple, from my experience at least here in Southeastern WI you can buy quality name brand button ups for 4 bucks, a nice suit jacket for 5-8 bucks, quality dress pants for 6-8 bucks. From my experience the only item which seems to not be good to purchase thrift is jeans so you might have to go somewhere where you can get a nice pair of well fitting jeans for 20-30 bucks.
I usually go and but 3-4 button ups, 2-3 slacks and nice dress shoes if they have any (also harder to find but you can find some nice ones for usually 8-10 bucks)
Suit jackets are incredibly versatile. You can throw on some jeans, a t-shirt, a suit jacket and some dress shoes and look like a million bucks. When you want to be fancier just wear a nice pair of slacks you bought. I never try to combine similar colored pants and jackets to give the appearance its one, and from my experience a two color suit look incredibly good.
There are also a lot of nice polos at Goodwill as well, i've often found brand new shirts and button ups with their original tags. Expensive clothes like Express and Armani for 4-5 bucks a shirt. With 20 bucks you can buy an outfit for that night that will make you feel like the best dressed dude at the club. Goodwill also sells suits for like 10 bucks a pop, I recently purchased a great suit for 9.99 that looked brand new and fit like a charm, I've been out and complimented on how well dressed I was even though my outfit was probably cheaper than a pair of jeans at Walmart.
So I suggest making a visit and experimenting with different combinations. I even purchased a nice brown leather jacket over the spring for like 8 bucks which I now use for when I dress up. If you're one of those people who has issues with using worn clothing then I suggest getting over it and realizing the amazing value. At the end of the day no one out at the club is going to look at you and assume you bought your outfit thrift. An added bonus is that suit jackets automatically give off higher value, and have extra value since most men I see out especially in their early 20s don't really use them.
Just some advice that has worked for me, I've never broken the bank for clothing but I've bought enough clothing to have a fresh combo every time I go out and not look the same twice. If you go once a month in a year you'll have enough combinations to last you a long while, with the added bonus that this is also clothing you can use for job interviews and other professional functions.
Any one else thrift/have any advice to share?
